The television was the problem in this Lilliput sitting room: it had to stop being the first thing you notice. So it was given a painted, panelled surround of its own, and the screen now sits framed by the panelling rather than hanging on a bare wall.
Beneath it runs a long, low cupboard with panelled doors. It takes the boxes and the cables, so the only things left on show are the ones meant to be seen.
Beside the screen, a column of open niches rises up the wall for the things worth showing. Further along, the fireplace opening is lined in antiqued brass, with the painted panelling returned neatly around it, so the fire becomes part of the joinery rather than a hole cut into the wall.
The same painted finish runs from the screen to the niches to the fire, and that end of the room now reads as one piece of work, made in our own workshop for this house. It is a quiet way to live with a television: there when you want it, part of the room when you don’t.
