A green in-frame kitchen in Broadstone, with a bookcase in the island

By Thomas Matthew

One room in Broadstone does two jobs: cooking at one end, sitting at the other. So the kitchen had to look as good from the sofa as it does from the hob.

What we made

The island does it. Its back is a bookcase, so the people on the sofa face shelves of their own rather than the back of a cupboard. On the kitchen side it is deep green in-frame and carries the hob, with stools at one end, so whoever is cooking has company.

The run along the sink wall is the same green, with cream tall cupboards holding the ovens and a pale worktop over it all. Every cabinet was built in our Poole workshop. A full-height larder is lined in oak, with racks on the backs of its doors, and the drawers have oak boxes with fitted dividers inside.

Aged cup handles on the drawers and dark bar handles on the tall doors finish it quietly. Now the cooking and the sitting share one room, and neither gets in the other’s way.
