Alcove shelving either side of a wood-burner in Bere Regis

By Thomas Matthew

In this sitting room in Bere Regis, the joinery is built around the wood-burner. We fitted both alcoves with shelving, set an oak beam across the chimney breast as the mantel, and made a run of tall cupboards for the wall by the hall door.

What we made

The shelves and cupboards are painted to match the walls, one deep colour all round, so the joinery feels built into the house, not added to it. Either side of the fire, the open shelves are full of books and model boats.

The tall cupboards have panelled doors and give the room its storage without taking anything from it. Like the shelving, they were made in our Poole workshop to fit these walls and no others.

In the garden room, a full wall of pale grey joinery runs out to the glazed doors and the garden. The two rooms ask for different things, and get them: one is deep and enclosed, made for evenings by the fire; the other is light and open to the outside.
